Buy My House Fast – Property Greed Triggers Murder Case

Property can trigger murderous passions. In the Thanos Papalexis case, if his caretaker had said ‘Buy my house fast’ his life could have been spared.

Money is perhaps one of the biggest motives in the dark world of crime. And as the case of property developer and British millionaire Thanos Papalexis shows, the property market can trigger murderous passions. The property developer was accused of ordering the murder of caretaker, Charalambos Christodoulides for refusing to move from a £2million North London property that the developer was desperate to sell. The story reveals that even the super rich can end up in a desperate situation asking, ‘Buy my house fast!’ The property developer was in dire straits financially and was trying to claw back the money he’d sunk into property to pay off mounting debts.

Buy My House Fast – Salvaging a Fortune

The caretaker was murdered for refusing to move from a building the property tycoon was desperate to sell. And yet, the millionaire found guilty of his murder was clearly not short of a bob or too, and had even built up a philanthropic profile – once hosting a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton. The court reports show that the son of a Greek shipping magnate had the man killed because he wouldn’t move from the £2million North London building. The property was one of a number he was asking developers to ‘buy my house fast’ in order to deal with growing debts. Papalexis was described in court as a ‘sleazy’ playboy. His main concern was that the caretaker refusing to move from his building was ruining an already ‘perilous financial position’. He wanted to release the money is the north London mansion to pay for another property deal as well as cope with debts. The caretaker was tied to a chair, tortured and beaten and strangled to death in March 2000. He was described as a ‘quiet simply man’.

Property Tycoon Felt he was above Law

On the day of the caretaker’s death, the property was sold for a £300,000 profit. Papalexis was convicted by the jury for murder despite denying knowledge and involvement. The prosecutor for the trial said: “It appears that the victim was condemned to die for no better reason than he was not prepared to leave his home.”

There has always been money in property, although that picture may have changed since the recession. But the court case shows that even the super rich can end up feeling the pressure of trying to find someone to ‘buy my house fast’ to pay off debts. Mr Papalexis however clearly thought he was above the law – the playboy also confessed to murdering his high-class prostitute girlfriend.
